Here’s How to Celebrate Your Second COVID 4/20
Stoners around the world wait in anticipation of 4/20 every year. It’s why there’s a collective sadness over the community entering year two of the big day during a pandemic. The usual blunt rotation and joint sharing must be replaced by safer activities and virtual events. Don’t fret, though. We’ll offer some ideas to celebrate 4/20 in a safe, COVID-friendly way.
April 12, 2021
What’s the deal with 4/20?
4/20 is all about celebrating marijuana. This holiday has been observed for many decades, despite the drug being federally-illegal across the board and illegal in many states.
For some, it’s about advocacy and pushing towards better marijuana laws. For others, it’s about meeting up with friends and getting really high.
However you celebrate, weed must be involved. The origin story of the holiday is hazy, though many trace it back to a group of high school students in the ‘70s who would ritualistically smoke weed at 4:20 pm every day after school.
With COVID in mind, here are our best suggestions for celebrating the big day:
SassyBlack: Digital Disco with special guest Ilana Glazer
April 20th: 4-5 pm
If you’re looking for an amazing 4/20 virtual event, look no further than this Digital Disco presented by Heylo Create.
This is the second annual Digital Disco livestream, and it’s about to be a party. Soul artist SassyBlack will be hosting alongside a very special guest: Ilana Glazer from Broad City!
There will be a creative DJ set by SassyBlack, as well as free product giveaways and fun activities.
The icing on the cake? Sponsors have pledged to donate $2 to the Last Prisoner Project for every attendee of the livestream. Round up your friends and have a virtual smokeout!
SPLIFF Film Festival
April 16th – 24th
Seattle’s film festival by stoners and for stoners is virtual again this year. That doesn’t mean it won’t be just as great as before.
We’ve gone more in-depth about SPLIFF before and think it is the perfect event for film and weed enthusiasts alike. Each film is a maximum of 4 minutes and 20 seconds, meaning you won’t have to stay focused or follow specific storylines for too long.
Gather up some friends and have a virtual film night! Choose between a night with hosts and a virtual smoke session or pick a night that is just the film festival viewing. And don’t forget to stock up on some green beforehand!
Since SPLIFF takes place over the course of several days, you can use it as the main 4/20 event or start celebrating early to lead up to the big day. After all, 4/20 starts April 16th with celebratory deals at our Bellingham dispensary, Seattle pot shop, Spokane weed store, and other locations!
The Great American Sesh In
April 20th: 3:30 – 7:30 PST
This hybrid event is open to the people in San Francisco on a patio and is also streaming over Twitch so people from around the world may join.
The event benefits the Last Prisoner Project, as well. With sets from DJ Shortkut, Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation, Chris Riggins, and more, it should be a night to remember! That is, if you’re not too stoned.
Get some friends to join you online and have a great virtual 4/20 sesh!
Safe in-person 4/20 ideas
While we recommend you stay home and attend a virtual event for maximum safety, we understand that the sunny weather and increase in people getting vaccinations has made it tempting to spend 4/20 celebrating in real life.
Fortunately, there are still some ways to make it work. The safest way to socialize and celebrate 4/20 with others is to only gather if you and your whole group is fully-vaccinated. According to CDC guidelines, fully-vaccinated (meaning two weeks after the full-course of shots) people can gather with other fully-vaccinated people indoors.
If you and your whole friend group are fully vaccinated, you can hang out inside and even pass the joint if you’re comfortable.
As of March 22nd, the whole state of Washington had entered Phase 3. This is subject to change as counties monitor their COVID rates and react accordingly.
In phase 3, a maximum of 10 people from outside your household may gather indoors. In the interest of playing it safe and avoiding risk, we don’t recommend celebrating 4/20 indoors without a fully-vaccinated group, especially if you’re all planning to toke up. The guidelines are there, though, and it’s up to the individual to decide what they are comfortable with.
Outdoor gatherings are limited to a maximum of 50 people. If you are looking to celebrate 4/20 with friends, we recommend utilizing the outdoor option. If it’s a nice day, it’s fun to kick back, toke up, and soak up the sun.
Enjoy nature alone or with friends
A great way to celebrate the holiday is in nature with friends. We recommend finding one of the many hidden beaches, parks, rivers, and other locations in Washington state and making the most of the day. Be sure to follow all safety guidelines and stick to what you are comfortable with when celebrating.
Don’t share smoking devices with friends unless you are all fully-vaccinated, either. Be sure to keep your devices clean and do not pass them around your group. Everyone can bring their own smoking supplies to minimize risk.
Make your own edibles
A fun and easy way to celebrate the big day is to make your own edibles. This can mean sweet treats or savory foods.
Try our stoner lunch recipes or make a weed milkshake. The opportunities are endless, especially if you already have cannabutter, cannabis coconut oil, or tinctures on hand.
Have a 420 movie marathon
Have a 4/20 movie marathon at home or with friends virtually. Just pull up your favorite stoner films and watch alone or connect with your friends on a video chat.
