There’s no doubt that weed can boost your appetite and make eating food more enjoyable. In fact, cannabis has been documented for centuries to promote strong food cravings and intensify the sensory and hedonic side of eating. Additionally, it is used to this day to improve appetite for those experiencing appetite loss on its own or as a result of another condition or treatment.
Of course, picking the best strains for a holiday or Christmas feast is much more playful than some reasons to use cannabis for appetite stimulation. The food is already delicious on its own, but a little marijuana can take it to the next level with an elevated sensory experience.
Without further ado, let’s dive into our top picks!
Butter Cookies
This indica strain is relaxing and uplifting, perfect to stimulate appetite and increase the pleasure you get from eating. The strain is crossed from Animal Cookies and OG Kush, and emits a sweet, creamy, vanilla aroma that is sure to make your mouth water from the start.
Another great effect of this strain? It’s super relaxing. If hanging out at the family table can be stressful or intimidating, a few puffs of Butter Cookies will have you feeling calm and at ease, which is sure to make the experience more enjoyable all around.
9 lb Hammer
You can’t go wrong with 9 lb Hammer. This indica strain crosses Gooberry, Hells OG, and Jack the Ripper to create a dense, sweet flower with heavy effects.
Often suggested for appetite stimulation and those looking for help gaining weight, 9 lb Hammer will certainly enhance your Christmas feast. It’s a heavy hitter and the effects can last a long time, so be sure you’re prepared for the relaxing, sleepy effects it can provide. The last thing you want to do is fall asleep at the dinner table because you smoked too much 9 lb Hammer. But hey, there are worse places to wake up than in a pile of mashed potatoes!
Duct Tape
Nothing can hold things together like duct tape, right? The aptly-named Duct Tape strain is here to hold you and your belly together while you indulge in the finest Christmas dishes.
This strain is a well-balanced hybrid that uplifts and improves focus, alongside stimulating appetite, of course. A cross between Gorilla Glue and Dosidos, it boasts a gassy, piney, and even chocolatey aroma sure to entice your senses.
While the strain provides a cerebral experience, it is also great for relaxation and calm. For someone hoping for a fun, tasty, and stress-free dinner, Duct Tape might be the perfect strain for you.
Space Cake
This potent hybrid strain is crossed between Girl Scout Cookies Forum Cut and Snow Lotus. The result is a fruity strain with hints of berries and cream, producing a flavor and aroma that alone can make you want to eat something tasty.
Space Cake can send you to space if you’re not careful, so go slow. If you play your cards right, you’ll be uplifted, relaxed, and happy as can be. Plus, this strain is known to increase appetite, making your holiday feast one for the books.
Raspberry Do-si-do
Want a serious case of the munchies to go along with your Christmas feast? Look no further than Raspberry Dosido, an indica dominant strain that promotes relaxation and munchies.
The strain is particularly uplifting and euphoric, allowing you to relax and melt into a comfortable respite. Be careful though, as this is another strain that can be a little too relaxing and lull you to sleep. If you don’t doze off after indulging in some Raspberry Dosido, your Christmas feast will be perfectly elevated with the help of this euphoric strain.
Why do some strains cause the munchies?
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite strains for stimulating appetite and getting the munchies, but we haven’t talked about why weed works in that way.
Without diving too deep into scientific jargon, we know that research indicates a large part of why people eat more food after using cannabis is simply because they can smell and taste it more acutely.
Studies have shown that THC heightens your taste and smell by manipulating neural networks to convince your brain that it is starving. Essentially, THC and natural cannabinoids produced in the body both work on the same neural pathways that influence smell and taste. When you consume certain THC products, your brain may get signals that it is starving, which can lead to a classic case of the munchies.
Not all strains are the same, though. Many do not lead to munchies and some even can reduce appetite. This is why we carefully rounded up strains that are known to stimulate appetite. You may notice something in common with our selections – they are all indica or indica-dominant strains.
Indica strains are much more likely to induce the munchies than sativa strains. This is because sativa strains tend to have higher levels of cannabinoid THCV. This cannabinoid is associated with appetite suppression and is sometimes a target in discussions about using cannabis to manage weight or reduce hunger. As such, we don’t recommend puffing on a heavy sativa before your holiday or Christmas feast.
