We all can use a little inspiration once in a while. Use this list to help keep your summer fun going all season long!

Bellingham summer recreation activities

There’s no better place to enjoy the summertime than in Bellingham, with its panoramic views and easily accessible nature. While there are plenty of high hikes and fun swimming holes to enjoy, we focused on other recreational activities in this post since those options are so abundant across the city.

Rent a kayak during the daytime or night

There are plenty of ways to get out on the water without having to swim. Kayaking is a great option for anyone looking for a new way to experience Bellingham or who just has a heart for adventure. The city has lots of boating centers and establishments that offer kayak rentals, so do some research on the best or use our suggestions below.

Check out The Community Boating Center, where you can choose between kayaks, paddleboards, or rowboats. You can get out on the water on a solo trip or bring some friends along for the ride.

If you’re looking for a magical, unique experience on the water, join The Community Boating Center on a nighttime Bioluminescence Paddle. The bioluminescence paddle takes kayakers out on the water to see the single-celled planktons that emit bright, glittery lights every year from June to September. It’s a special sight to see.

Check out Moondance Kayak or other Bellingham boat rentals to compare your options. Moondance Kayak offers multi-day, full day, half-day, and bioluminescent excursions.

Take a day trip to Birch Bay State Park

Just half an hour north of Bellingham is Birch Bay State Park in Blaine, Washington. It has gorgeous beaches for sunbathing, clamming, crabbing, boating, surfing, and more. You can spend a peaceful day watching birds or sailing, or have a more thrilling adventure down the road at Birch Bay Waterslides park

Birch Bay Waterslides is a small and modest park that still packs a lot of fun into the space. It has operated for over 35 years now and is a must-visit for anyone living in the area.

It offers eight different slides, a kiddie pool, activity pool, hot tub, gift shop, and concession stands. Birch Bay Waterslides is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for a controlled thrill without having to travel far.

If you don’t end up going to the waterslides, you can still have a full day at the state park enjoying the parks, beaches, and available summer activities.

Other Bellingham summer activities

Looking for something to do when the day cools off and a nice summer breeze remains? Why not try these summer activities that include a bit of indoor and outdoor settings to keep your summer fun and exciting.

Catch the next art walk

The first Friday of each month is Downtown First Friday, an expansion of Bellingham’s beloved Art Walk. As usual, local galleries will showcase their space and artists’ work. There will also be expanded community programming, with dining options, events, activities, and more.

The fresh programming makes the Downtown First Friday and Art Walk event even more entertaining than before. Running from 5 pm – 9 pm, it provides the perfect opportunity to grab dinner or a drink with friends before or stop by for a relaxing stroll after a long day of fun in the sun.

Attend a Downtown Sounds Show

Downtown Sounds is a favorite of many Bellingham locals. It started 17 years ago, as a small gathering in an alley. It has since grown to take up two entire city blocks, drawing in different members of the community to enjoy good music and friends.

This year’s Downtown Sounds takes place every Wednesday in August. August 4th will feature a performance from Nite Wave, August 11th will feature Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme, August 18th will feature High Step Society, and August 25th will feature the Dusty 45s.

You can find Downtown Sounds on Bay & Prospect Streets from 6 pm to 9 pm. The beer garden opens at 5:30, so show up early if you want to get your drink on before the big event. Oh, and did we mention it’s free?

Grab a drink at our neighbor, Gruff Brewing

We may be biased since they are neighbors to our Bellingham pot shop, but we think Gruff Brewing is the perfect brewery to spend a summer evening. Conveniently located in Downtown Bellingham, you can stop by before, during, or after any of the other fun summer events and activities the city has to offer.

Plus, you can bring your pooch! It’s dog-friendly and offers plenty of space for your furry friend to socialize or just relax by your side. Their large outdoor beer garden patio is complete with fun lawn games if you want to add some competition to your night out.

And we can’t forget to mention the great beer. In fact, we love Gruff’s beer so much that we have already posted about the best cannabis strains to pair with their different types of beers.

Gruff may be open year-round, but you should still make a point of visiting this summer!
