Here’s How to Make a Firecracker, the Easiest Edible Ever

October 27, 2021

Firecrackers are the perfect option to get high off of flower without smoking or following a tedious recipe. Similar to our recipe for turning flower into weed tea for a high-drating beverage, you just need a few ingredients you likely have in your cupboard already.

What are firecracker edibles?

Unfortunately for some thrill-seeking stoners, firecracker edibles have nothing to do with pyrotechnics. The edibles aren’t for the uninitiated, though. There may not be any firework explosions, but there might be an explosion of the…mind. Seriously, though. It’s easy to make a stronger-than-expected firecracker given the casual nature of preparation. And this can mean a much stronger high than anticipated.

Firecrackers are edibles made from peanut butter, graham crackers (or any preferred cracker), and weed. It’s really that simple. It’s why firecrackers are so popular among college students and why the author of this blog always had peanut butter in the cupboard when she attended Western Washington University.

They’re easy to make, but don’t underestimate them. If you’re not careful, they can take you on a much longer journey than intended.

How to make a firecracker edible

In just a few easy steps, you can have yourself a fresh, homemade firecracker to enjoy.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Peanut butter (or cashew, almond, etc)
  • Graham crackers (or saltines or other preferred crackers)
  • Weed
  • Foil

As we said before, this is a casual recipe. It’s why we won’t be providing any specific measurements. You can make a whole pile to share with friends or you can just make a single firecracker to spice up your evening at home.

How to make the firecracker:

  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Fill a pocket of foil with ground cannabis, fold neatly to cover all sides, and place in the oven. Allow the cannabis to heat up in the oven for at least 15 minutes while it preheats.

This should help the cannabis begin to decarboxylate, which is key to producing a potent edible. You don’t have to heat it in the oven for a full decarboxylation cycle on its own because the weed will continue to activate when the firecracker bakes.

  • Once your oven is preheated or at the 15-minute mark, whichever comes first, remove the foil with weed and open it to cool.
  • Spread a spoonful of peanut butter over your cracker of choice
  • Evenly distribute freshly ground weed over the peanut butter (if you don’t know how much to use, start with less than you would use in a joint to get high)
  • Stir it around with a knife or toothpick, aiming to coat all of the weed pieces with as much peanut butter as possible. The more fatty peanut butter touches the weed, the stronger the edible.
  • Spread another spoonful of peanut butter over a cracker and place peanut butter-side down on top of the ground weed. This will make a sandwich out of the two crackers, with weed and peanut butter as the filling.
  • Carefully wrap foil around the cracker sandwich and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
  • Allow to cool for at least 5 minutes and enjoy!

Not a big fan of the taste? Let’s be honest, weed mixed with peanut butter is not usually our first choice for a tasty treat. It certainly gets the job done, though, and can be pleasant with enough peanut butter and a flavorful cracker.

Still, you can make a firecracker experience even better with other additions, like a little honey or cinnamon sprinkled on top of the peanut butter mixture.

Key considerations for making firecracker edibles

There is always a debate amongst stoners about the importance of decarboxylating weed before making a firecracker. Some people have great results simply throwing the ingredients together and allowing the single baking process to activate the THC. Others swear by fully decarboxylating their cannabis in the oven before adding it to the peanut butter cracker.

We like to do a little bit of both by tossing our weed in to heat up with the oven. This gives it a head start on activating the THC but does not fully decarb the cannabis. In all of our firecracker experience, this method has always been successful. Your mileage may vary, though, and it’s never a bad idea to fully decarboxylate your cannabis to ensure it gets you high.

The amount of peanut butter added will have a big impact on the results as well. The fattier the better, so don’t skimp when you spread it on the cracker. Nutella can also be used for this purpose, as can other spreads that are high in fat.

Do firecracker edibles smell?

If you’re looking to make firecrackers as a discreet way to consume cannabis, you may want to reevaluate. Firecrackers most certainly smell, though they may be more subtle than other baked cannabis goods.

Firecrackers are made up of few ingredients, with peanut butter and cannabis being the most aromatic. Naturally, both will produce a smell when heated.

The weed smell will certainly be present, though the smell of peanut butter is a good distraction. Additionally, the edible being wrapped in foil helps to keep some of the smells in. When compared to making say, pot brownies, firecrackers are significantly less aromatic.

It’s still not a good idea to bake them in any place where the smell of weed will cause problems. You might get away with no issues, but there’s also a chance that someone will catch a whiff of the lingering smell.
