The options for celebrating the big weed holiday are endless. You can roll a big blunt, bake some dank brownies, or just stick to your usual routine. But we like to go big, and that’s why we’re opting for the gravity bong route. Let’s get to it!

But first, what is a gravity bong?

First things first, you need to know what you’re getting into. If your friend has said they’re going to make a gravity bong for the holiday, prepare to get really high. That’s because gravity bongs create suction to pull a large amount of smoke into your lungs, getting users much higher than a typical bong hit.

Most gravity bongs follow a similar blueprint: a water-filled base, usually a bucket or big empty soda bottle, a small bottle to create a vacuum effect, and a bowl head. When users take a hit, the bottle creates a suction that pulls a big puff of smoke into their lungs.

The result is a big, concentrated hit. Some users can pull an entire bowl’s worth of smoke into the chamber in one hit, which tends to get users completely zonked. Needless to say, gravity bongs are not for the weak. Those who choose to use them should do so wisely. Here’s how to make a gravity bong

One 16.9 – 20 oz plastic soda bottle with a cap
One 2-liter soda bottle
Utility or Xacto knife
Scissors
Bowl head from another bong or piece (or a homemade, makeshift one)

Steps to make a gravity bong

To make the gravity bong, start by removing the bottom of the smaller bottle using your knife. Don’t cut a lot of height from the bottle, just enough to remove the base. And please, be careful when you’re cutting the plastic. Do this before you get high, and go slow.

Next, you’ll want to cut the narrow top of the larger bottle. Cut enough off of the top so the neck and curved top are removed. Make sure that you can fit the small container without a base into the larger container’s top. Go ahead and discard the top of the large bottle.

Now you can take the cap from the smaller bottle and poke a hole through it, cutting until it is the right size to carefully add your bowl piece. Secure the bowlpiece into the cap and load with ground flower. This may take some serious cutting and wrangling, so once again, be careful.

Set the bottle with the bowl piece aside, and fill the base of the larger bottle with enough water to nearly reach the top.

Now, it’s time for the best part – time to hit the gravity bong.

How to use a homemade gravity bong

Once you have a large container filled with water and a smaller container with a bowlpiece loaded with weed, it’s time for the main event.

Start by submerging the bottom of your smaller bottle into larger one and hold in place. Now, light the bowl as you simultaneously lift the smaller bottle – slowly – until you reach just above the water’s surface. You will know you’re doing it right if the chamber beings to fill with smoke.

When the chamber is filled with smoke, remove the cap with the bowlpiece and quickly cover the mouth of the small bottle with your own mouth to inhale. And remember, this method produces a lot of smoke. Inhaling the whole chamber full of smoke is very likely to send you into a coughing fit, shortly before sending you into another dimension. But hey, it’s 4/20!
