SPLIFF Film Festival 2021 Is Almost Here

The SPLIFF Film Festival takes place virtually this April 16th-24th. This is the third annual film festival by stoners and for stoners. The inaugural event took place at SIFF Cinema in Seattle, but both this year’s and last year’s festivals have been adapted into a virtual format.

April 14, 2021

Stoners from around the world can join this year’s SPLIFF festival online and enjoy the top submissions alongside live hosts and entertainment. Even if you are not near our Seattle dispensary, you can be a part of SPLIFF!

While submissions are closed for this festival, you have a whole year to prepare for next year’s SPLIFF if you are interested in making a short film.

Tickets to this year’s SPLIFF are available here!

What to expect when you SPLIFF

If you haven’t experienced SPLIFF before, you are in for a treat. We recommend you stock up on some goodies at one of our Washington dispensary locations before diving in.

You have the option to choose between a couple of festival-only showings, or you can buy a ticket for one of the more interactive showings with live hosts and a smokeout session.

We don’t know exactly what to expect from this year’s SPLIFF Film Festival, and that’s half the fun! If you’re looking for a sneak peek, though, the trailer is right here.

According to the SPLIFF creators, this is a festival where “filmmakers, artists, animators, and stoners share original film shorts that examine and/or celebrate cannabis and its liberating effects on our imaginations, appetites, libidos, and creative energies.”

Basically, anything goes if it is in the spirit of SPLIFF and entertaining enough to be picked up by their panel of judges.

Expect a multitude of different videos capturing a range of cannabis experiences. These can be funny, scary, trippy, and anything in between.

Our most anticipated films

SPLIFF Film Festival Is Almost Here

Okay, so we do have a general idea of what we’ll see at SPLIFF. After all, the festival creators themselves put out this program teasing each film in the upcoming festival.

While we won’t list off all 24 of them, we will highlight some that caught our eyes and may help you get in the SPLIFF mood!

Bong Memories

We were immediately drawn to Bong Memories from the image and description. Here’s why:

“Step into the colorful world of Oscar, whose 50+ years of pot smoking directly influence his instructive and delightful doodles. Listen to your wise ganja elders!”

What does this mean? We’re not really sure. But we are excited to find out.

Ghost Smokers

Between our Spokane pot shop, Bellingham dispensary, and Seattle weed store, we have plenty of experience working in dispensaries. Naturally, we were drawn to this paranormal dispensary film:

“When a local dispensary reports recent paranormal activity in the store, it’s time to call in this hilarious crack-pot team to get to the bottom of things.”

We can’t wait to see what this paranormal weed story is all about!

Petey

There’s nothing like a story with heart, and we’re thinking Petey is going to back the feelings in this short film.

“After the death of her mother, our main character decides to take a trip home to see her father, proving that sometimes a little bit of loud can help bring a little bit of peace.”

We are really excited to see where this film goes!

Quick and Easy Pancake Recipe

Something about the simplicity of the title and description caught our eye with this one:

“This seemingly fool-proof recipe goes by fast. Make sure you don’t take your eyes away – even for one second!

Maybe it’s the misadventures we’ve had with cooking with weed, or maybe it’s because we whipped up our own weed pancakes recipe a while back. Whatever the case, we can’t wait to see what happens with this quick and easy pancake recipe!

What’s in it for the filmmakers?

Assuming categories have not changed, there will be winners for the “trippiest” film, the “stupidest” film, the “funniest” film, and an overall best film of the night.

Winners receive 20% of the ticket revenue up to $10,000. The winners of the festival will be announced a week after the festival ends.

All attendees will receive a virtual SPLIFF ballot allowing them to vote for their favorite film of the night. Even if you aren’t participating by submitting a film, you can still participate in the festivities by voting for your favorite stoner movie.

What does SPLIFF mean?

Wondering where the festival got its name? Oh, you innocent stoner, you.

A spliff is much like a joint but it contains tobacco alongside marijuana. It may look the same as a joint, but you’ll be in for a big surprise if you take a hit not knowing it contains tobacco.

While spliffs are somewhat popular among different groups of weed smokers, you’ll also meet a lot of people who refuse to smoke them. Some people claim tobacco makes the experience better, whereas others say it ruins the flavor and effects.

Though they are still found in the United States, an interesting survey from 2017 found that American weed smokers are the least likely to add tobacco to their joints out of any other surveyed country.

Several European countries, on the other hand, smoke spliffs more than other methods of smoking. In fact, the same study we referred to earlier showed that 94% of weed smokers in Italy add tobacco.

In the United States, the rate of adding tobacco to joints is relatively low. Still, the term remains common and evocative of both weed and tobacco.
