Strains from the Crypt

Cannabis with Seriously Spooky Names

October is here. The decorations are up, horror movies are playing on repeat, and we’re buying suspicious amounts of candy under the completely believable excuse that it’s “for the trick-or-treaters.”

So naturally, we started thinking about weed.

Cannabis strain names can get pretty creative, but some sound like they were created specifically for spooky season. Ghosts, monsters, poison, aliens, the undead—apparently cannabis breeders have been preparing for Halloween for years.

So grab your flashlight. We’re cracking open the crypt and taking a look at a few strains worthy of your Halloween lineup.

The Ghost Story: Ghost Train Haze 👻

Every good Halloween lineup needs a ghost, and Ghost Train Haze is one of the better-known spirits haunting the cannabis world.

Originally bred by Rare Dankness, Ghost Train Haze crosses Ghost OG with Nevil’s Wreck. It’s known for sour citrus, herbal, and piney aromas and has traditionally been associated with a more energetic, cerebral experience.

And despite sounding like the transportation method you’d take directly into the afterlife, Ghost Train Haze has become a modern cannabis classic. All aboard.

The Creepy-Crawly: White Widow 🕷️

A strain named after a deadly spider feels right at home in October.

White Widow is an old-school cannabis classic that rose to prominence in the Netherlands in the 1990s. It’s known for heavily frosted buds—which also happen to give it a pretty convincing cobweb-covered appearance.

Consumers often describe White Widow as earthy, woody, and slightly spicy, with effects that can feel balanced between cerebral and physical.

More than three decades after making its debut, White Widow is still hanging around dispensary shelves and earning new fans. No actual spiders required.

The Creature Feature: The Kraken 🐙

Release the Kraken!

Grown here in Washington by Buddy Boy Farms, The Kraken has been lurking around their garden for years—and frankly, we couldn’t make a Halloween list without inviting a legendary sea monster to the party.

Cannabis names don’t always tell you much about what’s actually inside the package, but they certainly make shopping more entertaining. And when a strain shares its name with a mythical tentacled beast capable of dragging ships to the bottom of the ocean, it earns a spot in the crypt on name alone.

Just maybe don’t watch Pirates of the Caribbean afterward.

The Trip to Hell: Dante’s Inferno 🔥

If we’re going into the crypt, apparently we’re going all the way down.

Dante’s Inferno, grown by Washington’s Fifty Fold Farms, takes its name from one of literature’s most famous journeys through Hell. With a name like that, putting it on a Halloween strain list feels less like a choice and more like an obligation.

The strain itself is known for modern dessert-style genetics, making the experience considerably sweeter than its name would suggest.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter the snack cupboard.

The Undead: Zed’s Dead ⚰️

You can’t have spooky season without somebody coming back from the dead.

Zed’s Dead has made its way onto POM’s shelves from Washington producers including Bohemi and Canna Lowlife, and the name alone earns serious Halloween points.

It’s also a good reminder that the same strain name can sometimes appear from different growers. Genetics, growing methods, harvest, cure, cannabinoid content, and terpene profiles can all influence the final product—so two jars bearing the same spooky name aren’t necessarily identical twins. More like creepy cousins.

The Poison: Durban Poison ☠️

Nothing says Halloween quite like putting POISON on the label.

Fortunately, Durban Poison is considerably friendlier than the name suggests. With roots tracing back to South African cannabis, Durban Poison has been around for decades and became internationally famous for its distinctive character.

It’s commonly associated with sweet, earthy, spicy, and anise-like aromas and a more stimulating experience than many of the heavy strains people reach for when couch-lock is the goal.

It’s an old-school strain that has managed to survive generation after generation.

The poison that just won’t die.

The Spirit: Santa Muerte 💀

With a name that translates to “Holy Death,” Santa Muerte certainly earns her place in the crypt—but there’s more behind this name than a spooky reference.

Santa Muerte is a Mexican folk figure associated with death and commonly depicted as a skeletal figure. The name has cultural and spiritual significance, so this is one member of our Halloween lineup we’ll treat with a little more reverence.

The version from Sweetwater Farms has an appropriately old-school lineage, crossing Mexican Sativa with Original Haze. Sweetwater describes herbal, subtly spicy, and sweet characteristics alongside a clear, uplifting, energetic experience.

Proof that you really can’t judge a strain by its ominous name.

Still Lurking in the Crypt…

Seven strains barely scratches the surface.

There’s Zombie Kush rising from the dead, Death Star floating somewhere in the distance, and Aliens on Moonshine making us question what exactly is happening in outer space.

Then there’s Monster Berry, which sounds like something you’d find in your Halloween candy bucket, and Poisoned Zkittlez, which sounds like something you absolutely shouldn’t find there.

Cannabis breeders, please never stop naming things.

Don’t Judge a Strain by Its Costume

As fun as strain names are, the name on the package only tells part of the story.

Cannabis genetics aren’t always standardized from one breeder or producer to another, and names don’t reliably predict how a product will affect you. Cannabinoid content, terpene profile, potency, genetics, growing methods, and your own individual response all matter.

So enjoy the creepy names, but check the label and talk to your budtender, too. Tell us what you’ve enjoyed before, what flavors and aromas you like, and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Sometimes the scariest-looking thing on the shelf might be exactly what you’re after.

Come Find Something Frightfully Good

Halloween only comes around once a year, but fortunately, weird cannabis strain names are forever.

Whether you’re stocking up for a horror movie marathon, heading to a costume party, or planning to turn off the porch light and pretend you’re not home, stop by Piece of Mind Cannabis and see what’s lurking on the shelves.

You might just find a new favorite.

Happy Halloweed, Bellingham. 🎃
