What Are the Most Famous Cannabis Strains?
Cannabis has been around for a long time before legalization. Like, a long long time. The oldest known written record of its use is in 2727 B.C. by Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. There’s also a record of ancient Greeks and Romans using cannabis before making its way to the western hemisphere. Naturally, some cannabis strains have stood the test of time. So, what are the most famous cannabis strains? Let’s take a look.

Legendary cannabis strains
Now, deciding which strains are the “most” famous is a little subjective. Depending on where you live, your age, and lots of other factors, the most popular strains may vary. But there are still some names that you may recognize from decades ago still going strong.
Blue Dream regularly tops the list when discussing popular cannabis strains. It’s no surprise considering this strain is so versatile and popular with people from all walks of life.
The origins of this strain aren’t entirely clear, but we do know its seeds were first planted in Santa Cruz. Considering California was the first state to legalize medical cannabis, it makes sense this iconic strain originated from a trailblazing state.
Somewhere along the way, a grower crossbred the indica heavy DJ Short’s Blueberry F5 with the sativa heavy, citrus-filled Haze strain. The results? An aromatic, deep green flower with golden hairs and a frosty blanket of trichomes.
Blue Dream is loaded with aromatic terpenes, producing a sweet and floral berry smell with hints of citrus and sandalwood. It has a fruity flavor some floral notes.
This is all great background, but we haven’t discussed why this strain has captured so many hearts. Many strains are aromatic with a frosty trichome layer. What really sets Blue Dream apart is its pleasant effects.
Uplifting and cerebral, Blue Dream is the perfect strain for full-body relaxation. Blue Dream users report feeling happy, euphoric, and creative when they consume this strain. Medical marijuana users find it helps with their depression, chronic pain, and nausea.
Next time you’re looking for a cerebral, happy, and well-balanced strain, opt for Blue Dream. It reached legendary status for a reason!
Sour Diesel is another popular sativa strain that has reached legendary status across the cannabis community. This aromatic strain can be smelled from across the room when someone opens up a package. In fact, it’s one of the sweetest-smelling strains we know today.
High Times reports that the strain used to be known as just Diesel, but the “sour” was added because of how many relationships it ruined. Is this true? We’ll probably never know since the report came from an anonymous NYC dealer who claimed to see the rise of this strain.
Regardless, it has certainly climbed to legendary status. First developed in the ‘90s, we’re not sure of its exact origin. Sour Diesel is believed to have resulted from an accidental cross of Chem Dog variation with Skunk #1, Super Skunk, or Northern Lights.
So what makes Sour Diesel such a legendary strain? It has dreamy, energizing effects that medical users report helps ease pain, stress, and depression. Its effects are favored among recreational users as well since it is a happy, uplifting, and euphoric strain.
This powerful indica is a very popular strain that has even won several Cannabis Cup blue ribbons. It is believed to have origins near Seattle, Washington, making it a popular choice for locals representing the Pacific Northwest.
Its genetics were propagated from indigenous landrace strains: Afghani and Thai. Somewhere along the line, it made its way to Holland in 1985. Genetics were adjusted in several cases, though some breeders kept the original intact. In 1991, the seed bank was bought back by Sensi Seeds and its growth has continued to legendary status today.
While genetics vary these days, Northern Lights is loved for being a pure indica. It produces euphoric effects and whole-body relaxation. It is sweet and spicy with a pungent aroma.
Medical users report that this strain helps with their depression, stress, pain, and insomnia. Others love it simply because it is relaxing, euphoric, and sleep-inducing.
We don’t have all day to list off the most famous cannabis strains. There are so many that have reached legendary status. Still, some strains remain at the top of users’ lists, like Blue Dream, Sour Diesel, and Northern Lights.
There are still some very important strains that deserve attention. Here are a few of our honorable mentions:
Cultivated in Florida in the ‘90s, OG Kush is a beloved strain that mixes Chemdawg with Lemon Thai and Hindu Kush. It has a skunky, spicy scent with notes of lemon and fuel. Known for making people happy, hungry, and relaxed, OG Kush is a lovely, well-balanced hybrid with legendary status.

We can’t leave out Chemdawg (or Chemdog), a hybrid strain that serves as a parent for so many beloved strains including Sour Diesel and OG Kush. Chemdawg is a sativa-dominant hybrid with a pungent and sharp aroma. It is very potent and tends to create a strong, cerebral high with a heavy overall feeling in the body.
