But first, what’s 4/20?

We’ve covered 4/20 in the past (like how to make a delicious green milkshake for 4/20) so we won’t spend too much time talking about the origins of the event. We are thrilled that this year will not be another COVID 4/20, though, where everyone has to celebrate virtually or in a very careful manner.

Here’s a quick rundown on the history of the holiday:

Observed for decades now, 4/20 is the ultimate celebration of cannabis culture. It’s transcended cannabis prohibition and archaic laws about the plant and continues to be a huge deal for cannabis lovers around the globe.

Some people use the holiday to advocate and push for better marijuana policy. Others meet up with friends and get as stoned as they possibly can. Many others fall somewhere in between.

Whatever the case—weed is involved.

While there is no proof to back up the story, it’s widely accepted that 4/20 began from a group of high school students in the ‘70s who would smoke weed at 4:20 after school every day. The time became symbolic for cannabis consumption and April 20th eventually became the official weed holiday.

Now that you know a little more about how 4/20 came to be, let’s get down to the real business: smoking weed.

We’ve gathered some unique ways to smoke weed for 4/20 so you can keep the spirit of the holiday alive.

Smoke out of a banana

Here’s a callback to the good ol’ days for some: smoking out of fruit. Did you know it’s easy to make an apple or banana pipe for smoking weed? We don’t recommend smoking out of fruit on the regular (it’s 2024 after all—we are surrounded by high-quality smoking devices), but it’s a fun novelty once in a while, especially for days like 4/20.

How to make a banana pipe:

This tutorial is copied from a previously posted guide we created:

“Do not peel the banana! Leave the peel on for the entire process.

Cut the end of the banana (opposite the long stem) about an inch from the tip, exposing the fruit inside.
Take your straw, pen (hollow it out first and remove the ink!) or knife and carefully push it through the center of the fruit, creating a small tunnel for smoke to flow. Do not carve all the way through. Stop about three-quarters of the way through the fruit, lengthwise.
Cut or push a hole through the top where you want a bowl. It should be near the long stem/the end that has not been chopped off. Do not push all the way through. Instead, connect this hole where the tunnel you carved ends with a slight hole to allow smoke to move through without weed falling out. This is your “bowl.” The goal is for both holes to intersect slightly while maintaining their structural integrity.
Clear out any pieces of banana or clogs to ensure a clear smoke.
Examine your banana. Does it have the same setup as a regular pipe? There should be a hole on top to serve as a bowl, and a hole that connects throughout the fruit where the smoke travels. The hole that creates a tunnel to meet the bowl is going to serve as your mouth piece.
Poke a hole perpendicular to the bowl piece hole to serve as a carb.
Blow through each hole to make sure air flows through all. If it doesn’t, you need to clear more space and make sure there are no pieces of fruit clogging your banana pipe.
Grind up some weed, place it in the bowl, and light up as you would any other pipe!

Now here’s where the fun comes in. Think about the shape of a banana. You can recreate this funky banana pipe with similarly-shaped produce. Eggplant? Zucchini? You name it. You can pipe it.”

Roll a rose petal joint

It’s true, you can smoke weed out of a rose petal! Just don’t buy your rose from the florist as these may be preserved with toxins that are dangerous to smoke. Only roll a rose petal joint with organic, pesticide-free rose petals.

Here’s how you do it, based on this Weedmaps guide:

Grind your desired amount of cannabis
Preheat your oven to 250 degrees fahrenheit
Lay three rose petals on a baking sheet with each petal overlapping one another
Place in oven for a few minutes until they feel slightly dry and like they can be rolled into a joint
Fill your petals with the ground cannabis
Roll as you would a normal blunt or joint—carefully
Lick the edges to create a seal
Place the joint back in the oven for 10-15 seconds to ensure it maintains its shape
Allow to cool for at least two minutes
Smoke up!
